Elisha Mitchell came to Chapel Hill in 1818, not long out of Yale, to teach mathematics at UNC. In 1819, when Mitchell was beginning to think about active botanical work, UNC bore little resemblance to the university of today. This book contains Mitchell's botanical notes as well as discussions of the topography and tracts in and around Chapel Hill, which was wild, forested and full of botanical interest.
