A Sand County Almanac is a collection of essays by Aldo Leopold that blends observations of the natural world from his Wisconsin farm with reflections on human impact, conservation, and a proposed "land ethic". Divided into three sections, the book begins with monthly observations of his farm, transitions to observations of other landscapes, and concludes with philosophical essays, most notably "The Land Ethic". Leopold argues for a new ethical framework where humans consider the rights of the natural community—soils, waters, plants, and animals—to exist in a healthy state, moving beyond purely economic self-interest to embrace a role as a "biotic citizen".
